{"id":15582,"date":"2020-05-29T21:40:43","date_gmt":"2020-05-29T21:40:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=15582"},"modified":"2020-05-29T21:40:45","modified_gmt":"2020-05-29T21:40:45","slug":"malta-takes-reins-at-moore-county-nc-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/north-carolina\/malta-takes-reins-at-moore-county-nc-airport\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Malta Takes Reins at Moore County, NC Airport"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Kim Stevens<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the new manager for Moore County Airport in North\nCarolina, Scott Malta, A.A.E., has already faced unforeseen challenges, taking\nthe reins during the spread of the coronavirus. \u201cI worked at my desk for one\nweek and then have worked from home since,\u201d said Malta, who started March 9th. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Scotty-Malta-Photoedit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15583\" width=\"210\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Scotty-Malta-Photoedit.jpg 500w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Scotty-Malta-Photoedit-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><figcaption><em>Scott Malta<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest challenges for Malta had been making\ndecisions for continued airport and FBO operations with people who had only\nseen him once. \u201cI\u2019ve since been able to go to the airport every couple of days\nand chat with the various customer service representatives and FBO line service\nguys.\u201d Malta noted that he had intended to get out and meet a lot of people\nlike the based tenants, local leaders and politicians, FAA and state aviation\nofficials as well as his consultants at Talbert &amp; Bright. Malta admits It\nhas been a tough situation. \u201cI really believe in face-to-face meetings and that\nhas been essentially impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Running an FBO as part of his airport management\nresponsibilities is a whole new area for Malta. \u201cNot only am I dealing with a\nlarger organization with Line Service and Customer Service staff, but I get the\nopportunity to influence the quality of service we provide.\u201d Malta is also\ndealing with pricing and ordering of fuel and supplies. While all of this comes\nwith some unique issues and opportunities, Malta says he is \u201ctruly enjoying\nthis new dimension\u201d in his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"442\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Moore-County-Airport-2edit-1024x442.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Moore-County-Airport-2edit-1024x442.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Moore-County-Airport-2edit-300x130.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Moore-County-Airport-2edit.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>GA ramp at Moore County Airport<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For Malta, an experienced airport executive with more than 40\nyears of experience, moving forward will have its own set of challenges. Like\nmany other small GA airports, funding will be the biggest challenge, with revenue\nfrom fuel sales making up a major portion of the airport\u2019s budget. \u201cWith the\nCovid-19 issue happening right at the beginning of one of our busiest seasons &#8211;\nmainly from out-of-the-area golfers flying in to play at the awesome courses in\nthe Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Whispering Pines area &#8211; our revenues are off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malta\u2019s military career in the Air Force was split into an\naircrew member (Boom Operator) on KC-135 Tankers and as an Air Traffic Control\nand Airfield Operations Flight Commander. In the civilian world, Malta was the\nOperations Manager at a small commercial airport in Virginia and the Airport\nManager of the Castle Airport, a large GA airport in California, formerly Castle\nAir Force Base. He has post graduate degrees in Airport Operations and Airport\nManagement from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and has been active in\nthe aviation industry as a board member of the American Association of Airport\nExecutives (AAAE), &nbsp;President of the\nSouthwest Chapter AAAE, President of the Association of California Airports,\nand he\u2019s served and is serving on several related industry boards and&nbsp; committees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll of this has given me a great foundation in the airport\nindustry as well as helped keep me current and very well plugged in,\u201d said Malta.\n\u201cIn essence I\u2019ve been training and working in Airport Management nearly my\nentire adult life and it is something I really enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1394edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15586\" width=\"304\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1394edit.jpg 700w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1394edit-300x152.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><figcaption><em>F-4U Corsair.
