The airplanes flew over hospitals creating giant messages\nin the sky that were as tall as the Empire State Building, spanning 5-10 miles\nand could be seen in a 15-mile radius.&nbsp;\nThe planes also typed their message over Long Island, including over Sachem,\nand Westchester County. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/GEICO-Skytypers-6-ship-Ascending-with-Smokeedit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15434\" width=\"310\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/GEICO-Skytypers-6-ship-Ascending-with-Smokeedit.jpg 800w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/GEICO-Skytypers-6-ship-Ascending-with-Smokeedit-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><figcaption><em>GEICO Skytypers<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The GEICO Skytypers, a fleet of vintage airplanes, &#8220;skytyped&#8221;\nmessages over hospitals in the five boroughs with positive affirmations and\ngratitude for first responders, healthcare and grocery\/retail workers, and all\nthose affected by COVID-19.&nbsp; The intent was\nto lift spirits and create awareness in light of the current global pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Skytypers fleet left from Republic Airport on Long\nIsland for the flight above the NY metro area&#8217;s hospitals starting their first\nmessages at approximately 11:30 a.m. over Manhattan.&nbsp; They then flew past the Statue of Liberty and\ndown the Hudson River and circled over the five boroughs before delivering\nmessages above Long Island. Their route started over Norwalk, CT following the\nshoreline thru lower Westchester county circling NYC and the five boroughs then\nheading out over Long Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We couldn\u2019t think of a better way to thank all New\nYorkers for their commitment to health and safety, especially those on the\nfront lines,&#8221; says Larry Arken, squadron commander and team flight lead of\nthe GEICO Skytypers.&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Millions of New Yorkers saw a fleet of six WWII airplanes promote safety awareness messages of thanks and hope in the skies above New York City last week.
