{"id":15007,"date":"2020-03-07T17:05:12","date_gmt":"2020-03-07T17:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/?p=15007"},"modified":"2020-03-07T17:05:13","modified_gmt":"2020-03-07T17:05:13","slug":"faa-expands-weather-camera-program-to-colorado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/colorado\/faa-expands-weather-camera-program-to-colorado\/%20","title":{"rendered":"FAA Expands Weather Camera Program to Colorado"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Photo by Shahn Sederberg, Colorado Division of Aeronautics.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expanding its\nhighly successful weather camera safety program to Colorado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FAA has entered into a cost-reimbursement agreement with\nthe State of Colorado Division of Aeronautics to install weather cameras on 13\nAutomated Weather Observing Systems (AWOS) in mountainous areas, beginning in\nthe spring of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These cameras will build on the success of a 20-year-old\nprogram in Alaska that has improved safety by providing near-real-time video to\npilots from a network of more than 230 cameras across the state. In 1999, the\nFAA determined that pilots operating under Visual Flight Rules would benefit\nfrom actual views of the current weather conditions where they were destined\nand the FAA Weather Camera Program was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 13 Colorado cameras will be the first to be integrated\ninto the FAA Weather Camera Program outside of Alaska. In addition to the\naccurate weather information they receive from AWOS, pilots planning to fly\nabove the Colorado Rockies will soon have the ability to see real-time weather\nconditions along their routes before they depart their airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This effort is made possible through a $226,000 reimbursable\nagreement between the Colorado Division of Aeronautics and the FAA. Under this\nagreement, the FAA will assist the state with the camera installations, and the\nstate will own and maintain the cameras.
