The Henderson Trophy, which is in the collection of the\nSmithsonian\u2019s National Air and Space Museum, was established in 1960 to honor\nthe creator and Managing Director of the world-renowned National Air Races from\n1928-1939. His work stimulated a generation\u2019s interest in aviation and\nchallenged the state of the art in aviation development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trophy is awarded to \u201c&#8230;a living individual, group of\nindividuals, or an organization whose vision, leadership or skill made a\nsignificant and lasting contribution to the promotion and advancement of\naviation and aerospace in the United States.\u201d A deserving nominee is put forth\nannually by the President of the National Aeronautic Association to NAA&#8217;s\nExecutive Committee for confirmation by majority vote. Previous recipients of\nthe Cliff Henderson Trophy include Colonel Joseph Kittinger, Marion Blakey, The\nUnited States Air Force Academy, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Lieutenant General\nJames H. Doolittle, Senator Barry M. Goldwater, Clarence L. \u201cKelly\u201d Johnson,\nScott Crossfield, and the 2019 recipient \u2013The Ninety Nines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Peggy Chabrian is being recognized for the creation of\nWAI, which began in 1990 when she gathered 150 people for the first Women in\nAviation conference at Embry Riddle\u2019s Prescott, Arizona campus. Four years\nlater, with the growing success of the annual conference, the aviation industry\nbegan to recognize and accept the need for the focus and energy offered by her\nvision. In December 1994, 16 founding board members, with Peggy as Founding\nPresident, established WAI as it is today. Presently, WAI\u2019s diverse membership\nof more than 14,000 includes representation from virtually every corner of the\nworld\u2019s aviation community and the annual conference has grown to over 4,500\nattendees and 175 exhibitors. WAI has awarded more than $12 million in\nscholarships at its conference since 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A longtime aviation enthusiast and professional aviation\neducator, Peggy is a commercial pilot with over 2,300 hours in airplanes,\nseaplanes, and helicopters. She has held several top positions in aviation\neducation including Academic Dean and Associate Vice President of Parks College;\nDean of Academic Support for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University\u2019s (ERAU)\nPrescott, Arizona campus; Director of the Center of Excellence for\nAviation\/Space Education and faculty member at ERAU\u2019s Daytona Beach campus; and\nchair of the aviation department at Georgia State University in Atlanta,\nGeorgia. Peggy was the second woman to hold the position of dean of an\nengineering school in the United States. The recipient of numerous aviation and\neducation awards, Peggy has received the FAA Administrator\u2019s Award for\nExcellence in Aviation Education and the Civic Award from the American\nInstitute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. She has been inducted into the Crown\nCircle of the National Congress on Aviation and Space Education and received\nthe Estridge Award from the University Aviation Association in recognition of a\nlifetime of dedicated service to aviation education. In 2009, Peggy was awarded\nthe NAA Brewer Trophy for her contributions to aerospace education and in 2016\nshe was named an NAA Distinguished Statesman of Aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf ever anyone has embodied the criteria for the Cliff\nHenderson Trophy it is Peggy Chabrian,\u201d said NAA President Greg Principato.\n\u201cShe is a visionary leader whose skill and energy have forever changed aviation\nfor the better. Her work will truly inspire future aviators for generations to\ncome. It is our honor to present the Henderson Trophy to Peggy Chabrian.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am extremely honored to be awarded the Cliff Henderson\nTrophy for 2020,\u201d said Peggy. \u201cIt is humbling to join the list of many great\nleaders in aviation who have been previously recognized. I appreciate the\nefforts of NAA over the years to support and enhance the aviation industry.
