The Howard Hughes Memorial Award honors individuals with\noutstanding career achievements in the realms of aviation and space. Sponsored\nby The Aero Club since 1978, the award is one of the most prestigious of its\nkind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Aero Club of Southern California is a Non-Profit Organization and according to Bill Withycombe, Aero Club President, has an all volunteer Board of Directors. “All profits from the Award program go to Student Scholarships,\u201d said Withycombe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Captain Sullenberger has been dedicated to the pursuit of safety for his entire adult life. While he is best known for serving as Captain during what has been called the \u201cMiracle on the Hudson,\u201d Sullenberger is a safety expert, speaker, and author and still flies privately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born in Denison, Texas, Sullenberger pursued his childhood\nlove of aviation, learning to fly at 16. Upon graduation from the U.S. Air\nForce Academy, he served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force, then was an\nairline pilot, instructor, and accident investigator until his retirement in\nMarch 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sullenberger became internationally renowned on January 15,\n2009 when he and his crew safely guided US Airways Flight 1549 to an emergency\nwater landing in New York City\u2019s frigid Hudson River. Sullenberger and his crew\nreceived international acclaim for their actions, including the passage of a\nCongressional resolution recognizing their bravery. Sullenberger was ranked\nsecond in TIME’s “Top 100 Most Influential Heroes and Icons of 2009\u201d and\nwas awarded the French Legion of Honour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sullenberger is the #1 New York Times best-selling author of\nHighest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters and also wrote Making a\nDifference: Stories of Vision and Courage from America’s Leaders. Clint\nEastwood directed the major motion picture about Sullenberger, titled SULLY,\nbased on Highest Duty, with Tom Hanks in the lead role. The film was released\nto critical acclaim in September 2016. Highest Duty was republished that year\nas SULLY: My Search for What Really Matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sullenberger is an international lecturer and keynote\nspeaker on how to achieve the highest levels of performance, reliability, and\nsafety through effective crisis management, continuous learning, leadership,\nand culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hughes\u2019 first cousin, William R. Lummis, established the\naward in 1978, and the Aero Club of Southern California presents the award\nannually.
