Photo Courtesy of Vermont Wing, Civil Air Patrol. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The flights taken with the Vermont Wing of the Civil Air\nPatrol in both 2018 and 2019 enabled the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks\nand Recreation to survey the entire state of Vermont and identify areas of\nforest disturbance. These disturbances included defoliation by forest pests, areas\nof tree mortality, and forest damage due to weather events, among other causes.\n\u201cBecause of these flights, we were able to map over 70,000 acres of damage due\nto forest tent caterpillar in 2018,\u201d said Joshua Halman, Forest Health\nSpecialist with the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFollow-up flights in 2019 allowed us to see that the\noutbreak of this insect was coming to an end, with just over 500 acres mapped\nstatewide. We map these damages with the help of the USDA-Forest Service, which\nprovides interactive tablets, software and support for the project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Vermont Wing, like all Civil Air Patrol operations\nnationwide, reduces taxpayer costs by relying on our volunteer pilots. Our\nsmall, fuel efficient Cessna aircraft reduce carbon emissions,\u201d said Col Ann\nBrechbuhl, Commander of the Vermont Wing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese flights and our long standing collaboration with the\nDepartment of Forests, Parks and Recreation, demonstrate both our Wing\u2019s\nversatility, as well as our ability to support time-critical state agency\nfunctions,\u201d said Col Ann Brechbuhl, Commander of the Vermont Wing. \u201cWe look forward\nto helping the Department in future conservation and related missions.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo above &#8211; The Vermont Wing of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) has completed its second year of collaboration with the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation.
