These grants are awarded to\nfund creative and inspirational ideas aimed at growing and diversifying the\nnext generation of aviators. In the last several years, American Airlines has\ngranted over $800,000 through its Flight Education Grant. This year, the\nprimary focus is on high schools utilizing AOPA\u2019s High School Aviation STEM\nCurriculum. AOPA and these schools have been invited to apply for a Flight\nEducation Grant, up to $25,000 each. Grants are awarded based on the potential,\ncreativity, and probability of success of the proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe AOPA You Can Fly curriculum is really making a\ndifference in the lives of the students in the program and American Airlines\nrecognizes that,\u201d said Brad Morrison, Manager of Pilot Career Recruiting at\nAmerican Airlines. \u201cTogether we will work to build the foundation for a\nlifetime journey of achievement and success in the cockpit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAOPA is honored to see the confidence American Airlines has\nin our aviation STEM curriculum,\u201d said Elizabeth Tennyson, Executive Director\nof You Can Fly. \u201cThe program instills a love of flying in young people and\nprepares students for careers in aviation and aerospace, which not only makes a\ndifference in our industry but also makes a difference in the lives of thousands\nof young people as they set a course for their future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AOPA\u2019s High School Aviation STEM Curriculum became a reality\nin 2016 with the development of a four-year curriculum for high school\nclassrooms. To date, ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders at 161 schools in 34\nstates are utilizing the program, which is provided free of charge thanks to\ngenerous donations to the AOPA Foundation. Recognizing the importance of\ncollege and career-ready goals, the curriculum is aligned with Next Generation\nScience Standards and Common Core state standards for mathematics. AOPA\ncollaborated with professional instructional designers and pilots to create the\nprogram, which will help students be prepared to achieve a certification or\ntake an industry-accepted test, such as the FAA Private Pilot knowledge test or\nthe Part 107 drone pilot certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feedback from teachers currently utilizing the You Can Fly\nprogram has been overwhelmingly positive. It\u2019s opening doors for students from\nall backgrounds and demographics. Approximately 5,000 students in private,\npublic, urban and rural schools across the country participate in the program.\nTwenty-two percent of the students utilizing the aviation STEM curriculum are\nfemale and 38 percent come from underrepresented groups\u2014a gamechanger for the\nfuture aerospace workforce and the face of the aviation industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The need for pilots, engineers, scientists, and technicians\ncontinues to grow.
