{"id":14008,"date":"2019-10-15T13:09:11","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T13:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/?p=14008"},"modified":"2019-10-15T13:09:13","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T13:09:13","slug":"natca-achieves-never-before-organizing-goal-large-regional-facility-washington-center-reaches-100-percent-union-membership-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/national-news\/natca-achieves-never-before-organizing-goal-large-regional-facility-washington-center-reaches-100-percent-union-membership-status\/%20","title":{"rendered":"NATCA Achieves Never Before Organizing Goal: Large Regional Facility \u2013 Washington Center \u2013 Reaches 100 Percent Union Membership Status"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In what is being called, an astounding achievement for labor\nunion organizing and solidarity, the local chapter of the National Air Traffic\nControllers Association (NATCA) at Washington Air Route Traffic Control Center\n(ARTCC; ZDC) has become a 100 percent NATCA facility, meaning all 379\nNATCA-represented air traffic controllers and other aviation safety\nprofessionals who work there have chosen to be dues-paying NATCA members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"900\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Washington-Center-NATCA.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14009\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Washington-Center-NATCA.jpg 900w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Washington-Center-NATCA-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Washington-Center-NATCA-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Washington-Center-NATCA-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>ZDC, sometimes also referred to as Washington Center, is the\nfirst regional center and largest facility in the National Airspace System\n(NAS) to have all of its NATCA-represented employees become members of the\nUnion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to represent each of our members who \u2013 through\nNATCA \u2013 have a strong voice to improve both their workplaces and their aviation\nsafety professions. But what Washington Center has accomplished is truly\nremarkable and groundbreaking and has raised the bar for what is possible when\nwe are unified in solidarity,\u201d said NATCA President Paul Rinaldi. \u201cThe men and\nwomen of ZDC have earned a special place in the 32-year history of NATCA and we\nare so excited for them and for our entire Union!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington Center is a regional radar facility that is\nresponsible for the safety of 140,000 square miles of airspace above most of\nVirginia and North Carolina, and parts of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland,\nPennsylvania, and West Virginia. It is one of 21 such facilities in the NAS, of\nwhich 20 are in the continental United States. ZDC is also the third-busiest\ncenter, handling more than 2.5 million aircraft each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NATCA Eastern Regional Vice President Rich Santa, himself a\nveteran air traffic controller at ZDC, said, \u201cI am proud of the membership at\nWashington Center. I am honored to be the Eastern Regional Vice President for\nthis monumental occasion. Our commitment to teamwork and solidarity has\nresulted in the first 100 percent regional center facility in NATCA&#8217;s history.\nThe 379 members at ZDC have embraced the importance of our collective spirit,\nsetting a new benchmark for our great Union. Thank you to the members of ZDC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NATCA ZDC Facility Representative Brian Shallenberger said,\n\u201cWe are thrilled at Washington Center that we achieved 100 percent NATCA\nmembership. This proves that our collective voice is stronger than any one\nsingle member. Any challenge ahead will be met with the wall of our collective\nspirit and strength, and that is truly amazing.
