Governor Ralph Northam has announced that nearly $1.5\nmillion in grant funding has been awarded from the Virginia Research Investment\nFund in its second funding round. The three-year grant will support the launch\nof the Commonwealth Center of Innovation for Autonomous Systems (C2IAS), a\ncollaborative research center led by Virginia Tech with Old Dominion University\nas its partner. Staff of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia\n(SCHEV) administered the grant competition, and members of the Virginia\nResearch Investment Committee (VRIC) approved the project proposal at its\nmeeting in Richmond yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first year, private collaborators will include\nAtlas-NA; Burton-LeRoy; Cambrian Design and Development; Procomm Aviation;\nSanchez Engineering Services; SimIS; Textron; and UAVPro. The project has lined\nup over $2.2 million in matching funds as a condition of the grant award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVirginia\u2019s colleges and universities enjoy a strong record\nof cutting-edge research, and we are proud to support the development of new\ntechnologies with promising commercial prospects, especially in the area of\nunmanned autonomous systems,\u201d said Governor Northam. \u201cInnovative projects and\npublic-private partnerships like these will help bolster the Commonwealth\u2019s\nleading position in the unmanned autonomous systems industry, advance the\napplication of these technologies, and reinforce our continued work to expand\nand diversify the Commonwealth\u2019s economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Round 2 competition invited proposals for capacity-building\nprojects at research centers in the strategic opportunity areas of small\nsatellites, autonomous systems, big data, cybersecurity and life sciences. Each\nproject was evaluated by a team of peer reviewers, entrepreneurs and investors\nto assess its potential for yielding commercial products in the long term. In\nAugust, Governor Northam announced an award of $1.5 million in grant funding\nfrom the Virginia Research Investment Fund (VRIF) in its second funding round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Virginia Research Investment Committee is excited to\nsupport unmanned systems research in Virginia,\u201d said Peter Blake, Director of\nthe State Council of Higher Education and Chair of the Virginia Research\nInvestment Committee. \u201cThe Center for Autonomous Systems will lead to new\nproduct development for first responders, infrastructure inspection, maritime\nsystems, and more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2016, the General Assembly adopted legislation to support\nthe Commonwealth\u2019s academic research enterprise and to promote collaboration\ntherein, creating the VRIF for research grants to public universities and the\nVRIC as the awarding body. Funds were appropriated for the research fund along\nwith $29 million in bonding authority to support the purchase of research\nequipment or laboratory renovations associated with researcher incentive\npackages and the translation of research into commercial use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
