Chao announced that\nthe Department will award $157 million in airport infrastructure grants to 34\nairports in 19 states, plus the U.S. Virgin Islands. This is the sixth\nallotment of the total $3.18 billion in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)\nAirport Improvement Program (AIP) funding for airports across the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/DOT-Secretary-Chao-1-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12845\" width=\"150\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DOT-Secretary-Chao-1-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DOT-Secretary-Chao-1-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DOT-Secretary-Chao-1.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><figcaption><em>Elaine L. Chao<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInfrastructure projects funded by these grants will advance\nsafety, improve travel, generate jobs and provide other economic benefits for\nlocal communities,\u201d said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Projects include runway reconstruction and rehabilitation,\nconstruction of firefighting facilities, noise mitigation, emissions reduction,\nand the maintenance of taxiways, aprons, and terminals. The construction and\nequipment supported by this funding increase the airports\u2019 safety, emergency response\ncapabilities, and capacity, and could support further economic growth and\ndevelopment within each airport\u2019s region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airport infrastructure in the United States, with 3,332\nairports and 5,000 paved runways, supports our economic competitiveness and\nimproves quality of life.&nbsp; According to\nthe FAA\u2019s most recent economic analysis, U.S. civil aviation accounts for $1.6\ntrillion in total economic activity and supports nearly 11 million jobs. Under\nSecretary Chao\u2019s leadership, the Department is delivering AIP investments for\nthe American people, who depend on reliable infrastructure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airports can receive a certain amount of AIP entitlement\nfunding each year based on activity levels and project needs.&nbsp; If their capital project needs exceed their\navailable entitlement funds, the FAA can supplement their entitlements with\ndiscretionary funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the grant awards include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Auburn Municipal Airport in Washington, $3 million \u2013 the\ngrant will fund the extension of Runway 16\/34.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fayetteville Regional\/Grannis Field in North Carolina, $15.5\nmillion \u2013 grant funds will be used to expand the terminal building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mobile Downtown Airport in Alabama, $2 million \u2013 grant funds\nwill be used to rehabilitate the aircraft parking apron that serves the\nterminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Portales Municipal Airport in New Mexico, $3 million \u2013 the\nairport operator will use the grant to reconstruct Runways 8\/26 and 1\/19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salt Lake City International Airport in Utah, $7.7 million \u2013 grant funds will be used to construct an apron to provide aircraft parking for users of the airport.
