Kellogg Airport celebrated its 95th birthday last week.\nOn September 24, 1924, the Battle Creek, Michigan Area Chamber of Commerce\nsigned a five-year lease of a farm, with an option to purchase, for an aviation\nfield. Field grading began quickly, and the Battle Creek Airport officially\nopened Aug. 28, 1925.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tower-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13905\" width=\"238\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tower-1-1.jpg 665w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tower-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><figcaption>W<em>.K Kellogg Control Tower<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Battle Creek Airport was renamed the W.K. Kellogg\nAirport on June 20, 1928, after W.K. Kellogg donated $60,000 to purchase the\nland option, and for airport improvements and equipment. At that time, Kellogg\nexpressed his preference that the airport, not carry his name; despite that,\nthe airport has done so for more than 90 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs one of the largest general aviation airports in Michigan,\nthe W.K. Kellogg Airport is consistently ranked in the top five busiest\nairports in Michigan,\u201d said Airport Director Larry Bowron, who has managed the\nairport for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are privileged to have such a unique and diverse tenant\nbase that includes flight training and aircraft maintenance, as well as\naircraft manufacturing\/re-manufacturing, and fix base operator services, to\nfuel and service aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The airport has a rich history of aviation firsts, and\ncutting-edge advancements in air transportation, including airmail service to\nBattle Creek in the summer of 1928. By the fall of 1929, Battle Creek enjoyed\nits first regular air passenger service, which would continue on and off\nthrough the late 1980s. In 1935, a two-way radio traffic control tower was installed\nat the airport, the first of its kind outside of Detroit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire airport was leased to the U.S. Army from June\n1942 through the end of World War II in September 1945.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"571\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kellogg-Airport-1930s-1024x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13906\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kellogg-Airport-1930s-1024x571.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kellogg-Airport-1930s-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>W.K. Kellogg Airport, circa 1930. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During that time, the military referred to the airport as\nKellogg Field. Later, in August 1947, the airport was designated by Gov. Kim\nSigler as the base for the 172nd Fighter Squadron for the Michigan Air National\nGuard, a first in the state\u2019s ANG history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>W.K. Kellogg Airport sits on more than 1,250 acres, and has\ngrown tremendously over the years, both in infrastructure and in the number of\ntenants operating on the field. Current tenants include the Michigan ANG,\nDuncan Aviation, FAA Flight Inspection Field Office, WACO Classic Aircraft, and\nmore than 50 private aircraft owners.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>W.K.
