The MD-80, also known as the Super 80,\nwas the workhorse of the airline\u2019s fleet throughout the 1980s and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/MD-80-climbing001edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13648\" width=\"321\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MD-80-climbing001edit.jpg 800w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MD-80-climbing001edit-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 321px) 100vw, 321px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Super 80 era began at American in May 1983 with three\naircraft serving six cities \u2014 Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW); Detroit (DTW); New York\nCity (LGA); Memphis, Tennessee (MEM); Nashville, Tennessee (BNA); and Ontario,\nCalifornia (ONT). When introduced, the MD-80 was one of the most fuel efficient\ncommercial airplanes in the sky. American was the first of the large U.S.-based\nairlines to introduce the aircraft to its fleet and, by 2003, was operating 362\nof the iconic planes, representing approximately one-third of all MD-80s ever\nproduced by McDonnell Douglas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>American\u2019s final MD-80 revenue flight, American Flight 80,\nis scheduled to depart DFW for the last time at 9 a.m. bound for O\u2019Hare\nInternational Airport in Chicago.
