{"id":13603,"date":"2019-08-26T19:21:33","date_gmt":"2019-08-26T19:21:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/?p=13603"},"modified":"2019-08-26T19:21:35","modified_gmt":"2019-08-26T19:21:35","slug":"lee-county-port-authority-breaks-ground-on-new-atc-tower-at-southwest-florida-international","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/florida\/lee-county-port-authority-breaks-ground-on-new-atc-tower-at-southwest-florida-international\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Lee County Port Authority Breaks Ground on New ATC Tower at Southwest Florida International"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Lee County Port Authority, Board of Port Commissioners,\ncounty officials, business partners and other state and federal representatives\nheld a groundbreaking ceremony marking the official start of the construction\nphase for a new Airport Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) and Terminal Radar\nApproach Control (TRACON) facility at Southwest Florida International Airport\n(RSW) in Fort Myers, Fla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new ATCT is an $80 million project that will replace the\ncurrent tower, built in 1982, with a state-of the-art-facility located next to\nthe airport\u2019s Aircraft Rescue &amp; Fire Fighting Station. The ATCT project is\nfunded with money from the Florida Department of Transportation and Airport\nPassenger Facility Charges. The construction phase of the ATCT will support\nmore than 300 jobs and operation of the tower is planned for summer 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith record-breaking passenger growth during the past\nseveral decades, the new Airport Traffic Control Tower project is a crucial\ninvestment in RSW\u2019s infrastructure and will enhance the safety and capacity at\nSouthwest Florida International Airport,\u201d said Jeff Mulder, A.A.E, executive\ndirector of the Lee County Port Authority. \u201cCommercial air transportation is\nvital to our community as it connects our region to the rest of the world and\nallows us access to an increasingly global marketplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new tower will be approximately 200 feet tall from the\nground to the cab roof, which is more than twice the height of the existing\ntower. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Traffic Controllers will be\nable to view the entire airport and runway approaches under the current and\nfuture parallel runway configurations for both air and ground control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will equip the new tower with the latest technologies so\nFAA Air Traffic Controllers can continue to provide the safest, most efficient\nservice for flights at RSW for decades to come,\u201d said Michael O\u2019Harra, regional\nadministrator for the FAA Southern Region. \u201cStrengthening the infrastructure at\nthis growing airport will benefit travelers in Fort Myers and throughout the\nNational Airspace System.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Southwest Florida International Airport served nearly 9.4\nmillion passengers in 2018 and is on pace to reach 10 million passengers in\n2019.
