Scott Crossfield Aerospace Educator of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) has announced that\nScott McComb, Raisbeck Avation H.S. Science Department Chair, Founding Coach\nand Chair of the Washington State Science Olympiad, American Institute of\nAeronautics &amp; Astronautics (AIAA) Founding Advisor, and Green Energy Team\nFounding Advisor, has been selected as the 2019 A. Scott Crossfield Educator of\nthe Year. McComb will receive the honor, including a $2,500 cash award, during\nthe NAHF\u2019s Enshrinement events in Denver, Colorado on September 27th and 28th.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Crossfield Award, founded in 1986 by NAHF Enshrinee\nScott Crossfield, is a juried annual competition to recognize a teacher for his\nor her exemplary use of aerospace in their classroom curricula. Crossfield, who\nwas inducted in 1983, was a renowned test pilot, research pilot and aerospace\nresearcher. His tests with pressurized suits led to the development of the\nspace suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McCombs&#8217; accomplishments include development of the program\nof Physics of Flight and Aerospace Engineering which provides students robust\ncreative problem solving techniques using various materials. McComb&#8217;s\ncurriculum includes many exceptional activities that are student-involved such\nas the Wing Beam where students design, built, and test the most efficient\ncomposite wing beam possible. Other programs include the design, build, and\ntesting of heat shields; investigate and evaluate factors that affect take off\nperformance in conjunction with flight test engineers; development, build, and\ntesting of solar powered Martian rovers. Over the past fourteen years, McComb\nhas been dedicated to continuing his own scientific and aviation academia by\nperforming scientific research in the Arctic, obtaining his private pilot&#8217;s\nlicense, interning at both Boeing Flight Test and Blue Origin, and learning\ncomputational modeling in physics. He is a well-recognized and respected\neducator at one of the top college-prep STEM schools in the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terese Tipton, Principal of Raisbeck Aviation School, said\nof McComb, \u201cScott McComb has developed, enhanced and implemented an outstanding\nprogram of Aerospace Engineering education at one of the top college-prep STEM\nschools in the nation. He believes wholeheartedly in the power of encouraging\nand developing the unique talents of each of his students \u2013 he transforms\nstudents\u2019 young minds from being hesitant, to being researchers and\nscientists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The presentation of the Crossfield Award will be made by\n2001 NAHF Enshrinee Major General Joe Engle, USAF (Ret). The NAHF\u2019s\nEnshrinement is open to the public and reservations are available by advance\npurchase. Nearly 1,000 people are expected to attend, including industry\nleaders and over a dozen returning Enshrinees, including Mission Control\nSpecialist Gene Kranz, pilot astronaut Joe Engle, Apollo astronaut Walt\nCunningham, space shuttle astronauts Charlie Bolden and Hoot Gibson, aviation\nvisionary and test pilot Clay Lacy, general aviation titan Dale Klapmeier and\nTuskegee Airman Charles McGee. NAHF candidates Rhea Seddon, Peggy Chabrain and\nConnie Tobias will also join the celebration this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ceremony, led by emcee Matthew Burchette, features the\nformal installment of the NAHF Enshrinee Class of 2019; Colonel Guion \u201cGuy\u201d S.\nBluford, USAF (Ret), Ph.D. aerospace engineer, fighter pilot, decorated Vietnam\nveteran, space shuttle astronaut; (the late) Colonel Gregory \u201cPappy\u201d Boyington,\nUSMC, Medal of Honor Awardee, \u201cFlying Tiger\u201d combat pilot, CO of the \u201cBlack\nSheep Squadron\u201d, WWII POW; Brigadier General Charles M. Duke, Jr., USAF (Ret),\nUSNA graduate, NASA Group 5, CAPCOM Apollo 11, LMP Apollo 16, 10th person to\nwalk on the moon; Martha &amp; John King, 40 year veterans of aviation\ninstruction, revolutionary pioneers of multimedia training programs; and (the\nlate) Katherine Stinson, fourth female in the U.S. to earn a pilot\u2019s certificate,\nfounder of the Stinson School of Flying. The five inductees will bring the\ntotal number of NAHF Enshrinees to 246. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sponsorship is available at all levels and, while limited,\nincludes premium seating with other associated benefits; some levels include invitations\nto the President\u2019s Reception.
