A public-use airport is one that is available for use\nby the general public without a requirement for prior approval of the airport\nowner or operator, as defined by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAviation contributes $23 billion to the Virginia economy\nannually, and transports more than 8.3 million tourists to our Commonwealth\neach year,\u201d said Governor Northam. \u201cThis funding will support critical infrastructure\nupgrades and enhance the operations of our airports, which will in turn improve\ntravel for all Virginians and bring even more visitors on board to visit\nVirginia.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Virginia Aviation Board awarded $13.95 million to\ncommercial services airports, a type of public-use airport that is publicly\nowned, accommodates at least 2,500 passenger boardings each calendar year, and\nreceives scheduled passenger service. Funding totaling $3.23 million was\nawarded to air carrier-reliever airports, which are public-use airports\ndesignated by the FAA to relieve congestion at commercial services airports and\nprovide improved general aviation access to the overall community. General\naviation airports, or public-use airports that do not have scheduled service or\nhave less than 2,500 annual passenger boardings, received $4.1 million in\nfunding. The Board action took place today at its quarterly meeting in Roanoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVirginia\u2019s airports are national and international gateways\nto the world,\u201d said Secretary of Transportation Shannon Valentine. \u201cInvesting\nin our airports opens the door for new visitors, increased commerce, and\ngreater opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Commonwealth does not own or operate any of the 66\npublic use airports, the funds awarded today help all Virginians\u2014even those who\nmight never fly. The funding will support business creation, jobs, income and\ntax revenues, and the delivery of goods and services to consumers who have\naccess to the global marketplace through these airports. The aviation industry\npays more than $7.7 billion in wages across the 66 public-use airports in\nVirginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Board provides some level of funding at each of its\nmeetings, but the funding we award each year in August is always the largest\nthat we disburse,\u201d said Virginia Aviation Board Chairman Rod Hall. \u201cIt\u2019s a\ngreat way to start off the Commonwealth\u2019s fiscal year, and it helps prime the\neconomic pump that is the aviation industry. Each of the 144,000 jobs at\nVirginia\u2019s airports supports another 2.2 jobs\u2014an additional 316,800 people\u2014in\nthe Commonwealth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the Virginia Aviation Board are appointed by the\nGovernor and represent defined geographic areas of the Commonwealth. The Board\nprovides a means of citizen access to the Department of Aviation. The Board is\nresponsible for publicizing and monitoring policies and programs of the\nDepartment, recommending regulations to promote and develop safe aviation practices,\nand allocating funds to localities for aviation development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVirginia\u2019s airports are the front door to the communities\nthey serve,\u201d said Mark Flynn, director of the Virginia Department of Aviation.\n\u201cThey are the first and last impression business development professionals have\nwhen deciding to locate in a particular community.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission of the Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV) is\nto offer convenient access to the national air transportation system, cultivate\nan advanced aviation system that is safe and secure, and supports economic\ndevelopment; promote aviation education and awareness; and provide the safest\nand most efficient flight services for the Commonwealth\u2019s leadership and state\nagencies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Governor Ralph Northam recently announced that the Virginia Aviation Board has awarded nearly $22 million in funding to support Virginia\u2019s 66 public-use airports.
