{"id":13538,"date":"2019-08-18T20:54:43","date_gmt":"2019-08-18T20:54:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/?p=13538"},"modified":"2019-08-18T20:54:44","modified_gmt":"2019-08-18T20:54:44","slug":"oklahoma-governor-declares-august-aviation-and-aerospace-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/oklahoma\/oklahoma-governor-declares-august-aviation-and-aerospace-awareness-month\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Oklahoma Governor Declares August Aviation and Aerospace Awareness Month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission\u2019s August 7 meeting, a\nproclamation was presented to the Commission from the office of Governor J.\nKevin Stitt declaring the entire month of August \u201cOklahoma Aviation and\nAerospace Awareness Month\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Proclomation-622x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13539\" width=\"277\" height=\"454\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The state\u2019s first-ever Oklahoma State Aviation &amp;\nAerospace Day was celebrated on August 19, 2018, after the passage of a measure\nplacing it into state law during the 2017 legislative session.&nbsp; The date runs concurrent to National Aviation\nDay which was originally declared on August 19, 1939, when Franklin Delano\nRoosevelt issued a presidential proclamation encouraging citizens to observe\nthe day with activities that promote interest in aviation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some 80 years since the first national proclamation,\nGovernor Stitt, a private pilot himself, penned this month\u2019s proclamation to\ncontinue to express the importance of powered flight across the state, nation\nand world by commemorating and celebrating the rich heritage of aviation in\nOklahoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aviation and aerospace in Oklahoma supports 206,000 jobs.\nThe Aviation and Aerospace sector supports nearly $44 billion in annual\neconomic activity and is the second largest industry in the state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As noted in the proclamation, aviation has been with the\nSooner state since statehood as Clyde Cessna performed test flights of his\nearly aircraft in western Oklahoma. Oklahoma established a rich aviation and\naerospace heritage as business aviation began in the state when Frank Phillips,\nW.G. &#8220;Bill&#8221; Skelly, and other oilmen found that the fastest most\nefficient way to get to their oilfields was with an airplane. Several of the\nfirst commercial airlines were founded here; Braniff, and the first Southwest,\nSouthwest Air Fast Express, started by Erle Halliburton. They both became part\nof a fledgling airline at the time\u2014American Airways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oklahoma is well served by the state&#8217;s 104 general aviation\nairports and 4 commercial airports. Of those airports, 45 are jet-capable,\nmeaning they have at least a 5,000 foot runway which is more jet-capable\nairports per capita than any other state, with 95% of our state&#8217;s population\nliving within 30 minutes of a jet-capable airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oklahoma is now recognized as one of the seven centers in\nthe world for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft. Oklahoma hosts\nthe world\u2019s largest military aircraft repair facility, Tinker Air Force Base,\nand commercial aircraft repair facility, the American Airlines maintenance base\nin Tulsa.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proclamation also highlights that the future of a safe,\nsecure, efficient and progressive aviation and aerospace industry is dependent\non energizing state and national policies, well informed and educated citizens,\na technology proficient workforce, bold pioneering research, ingenuity,\nperseverance and courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Commission is dedicated to ensuring that the needs of\ncommerce and communities across Oklahoma are met by the state&#8217;s 108 publicly\nowned airports that comprise the Oklahoma Airport System, ensuring the growth\nand vitality of the state&#8217;s aerospace industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This August, citizens are asked to devote some portion of\nthe state\u2019s Oklahoma Aviation and Aerospace Awareness Month to honor the\nachievements of Oklahomans in aviation and aerospace.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oklahomans are encouraged to visit museums about aviation\nhistory and technology such as the Tulsa Air and Space Museum, the Stafford Air\nand Space Museum in Weatherford, or the 99\u2019s Museum of Women Pilots in Oklahoma\nCity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission\u2019s August 7 meeting, a proclamation was presented to the Commission from the office of Governor J.
