Aviation built Alaska, supports thousands of jobs, and adds\nbillions of dollars to our economy. A recently released report, the 2019\nEconomic Contribution of the Aviation Industry to Alaska\u2019s Economy presents an\neconomic analysis of Alaska\u2019s aviation industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report shows that the aviation industry supports more\nthan 35,000 jobs statewide while adding more than $3.8 billion annually to the\neconomy. The Alaska International Aviation System, comprised of Ted Stevens\nAnchorage International Airport and Fairbanks International Airport generate\nmore than 26,000 jobs. In Anchorage, 1 in 10 jobs are attributed to the Ted\nStevens Anchorage International Airport and in Fairbanks, 1 in 13 jobs are\nattributed to Fairbanks International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe economic strength of Alaska\u2019s aviation industry clearly\nshows the economy is becoming more diverse and growing,\u201d said Governor Michael\nJ. Dunleavy. \u201cIn fact, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport was recently\nnamed the best air cargo airport in North America and that tells the global\nbusiness community that Alaska is open for business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contributions of aviation are vital in a state where 82%\nof the communities are accessible only by air. From floatplane docks, to the\nsmallest rural airport, to the largest international airport, each airport\ncontributes to the quality of life enjoyed by Alaska\u2019s businesses, residents,\nand visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAirports are essential for doing business in Alaska and supporting\nour state\u2019s world renowned tourist destinations,\u201d said John MacKinnon,\nCommissioner of the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public\nFacilities. “Our ongoing maintenance efforts and construction projects at\nthe two internationals and the other 237 state-owned airports enhance aviation\nsafety, increase airport capacity, and support economic development throughout\nthe state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information contained in the report will be used to\ndemonstrate the significant role that commercial and general aviation airports\nplay in supporting Alaska\u2019s economy. Northern Economics prepared the report and\nthe Federal Aviation Administration funded the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public\nFacilities oversees 239 airports, 10 ferries serving 35 communities, more than\n5,600 miles of highway and 776 public facilities throughout the state of\nAlaska.
