The company\u2019s first 90-ton shipment started in May into Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s announcement continues moving the airport corridor\nforward as a manufacturing and distribution hub. Congratulations to Christina\nand her team for this huge success for our region. As Pittsburgh strives to\nmake additional connections to the global marketplace, this is a big step along\nthat path,\u201d said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. \u201cThe success of\nQatar Airways, and the partnership with EFL, strengthens our ability to attract\nmanufacturing and distribution to the airport. We are planting the seeds for\nmanufacturing, distribution, logistics and connectivity in the global\nmarketplace. We are excited to see it bear much fruit in the years to come, and\nto see the growth of jobs in these areas continue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Doha to Pittsburgh service offers its customers in Asia\na solution for 72-hour transit time from the Asia-Pacific region to regional\ndistribution centers and retail stores in the United States. Pittsburgh\u2019s\nlocation midway between Chicago and New York offers convenient access to two of\nthe largest air cargo markets in the U.S. and many markets in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to build Pittsburgh into an international\nlogistics center and with great partners like Qatar Airways Cargo and EFL, that\ngoal is becoming a reality,\u201d Pittsburgh International Airport CEO Christina\nCassotis said. \u201cThis is cargo that used to enter into the U.S. through major\nairports such as New York and Chicago but instead they\u2019re choosing to use our\nregion as a gateway. That means jobs and business for our region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pittsburgh International Airport\u2019s close proximity to major\nNorth American cities and efficiency for operations has provided Qatar Airways\nCargo and EFL an improved experience for shipping global air freight. The Qatar\nAirways Cargo flights to Pittsburgh also provides $42.8 million of annual\neconomic output for the Pittsburgh region, supporting 265 additional jobs\nwithin the region according to a study performed by EDRG in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qatar Airways Senior Vice President Cargo Sales and Network\nPlanning Peter Penseel said, \u201cWe see the Americas as an important cargo market.\nOur freighter services to Pittsburgh are doing extremely well and help connect\nglobal markets to the region while also offering businesses in Pennsylvania\ndirect uplift to our growing cargo network. Through our collaboration with EFL,\ntheir customers in the Indian subcontinent and South East Asia benefit from\ninnovative and faster supply chain solutions and dedicated capacity of more\nthan 100 tonnes each week to regional distribution centers and retail stores in\nthe United States using Pittsburgh as a gateway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qatar Airways Cargo began operating twice-weekly scheduled\nBoeing 777 freighters into Pittsburgh International Airport in October 2017,\nmarking the 17th destination in the Americas for Qatar Airways Cargo at the\ntime, and is the first scheduled international freighter route for Pittsburgh\nInternational Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EFL\u2019s Group Chief Executive Officer Senthil Shanmugam said,\n\u201cAt EFL, it has been a constant pursuit to find efficient and innovative\nsolutions for our customers, which has led us to this initiative with Qatar\nAirways Cargo, with who we have a relationship for over a decade. Considering\nEFL\u2019s spread of seven offices in USA, of which five of them being in East Coast\nand Midwest, having a gateway that is accessible to these regions was\nimportant. Pittsburgh is a logical location for this operation as it allows us\nto have a fast turnover of cargo in comparison to more traditional and\ncongested gateways.
