In its July meeting, the N.C. Board of Transportation\napproved state and federal grants for various infrastructure improvement\nprojects at 12 North Carolina airports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nearly $7 million in state and federal funding has been\nawarded for projects that improve runway lighting, establish new fueling areas,\nexpand taxiways and otherwise help these airports grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At Avery County Airport, the money will be used to construct\na new partial-length parallel taxiway and to finish the expansion of the\naircraft parking apron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis will definitely benefit us big time,\u201d said Sam\nCalvert, Chairman of the Avery County Airport Authority. \u201cSafety is the most\nimportant thing here- right now, planes go directly on to the runway to take\noff. The taxiway eliminates that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt also opens up new areas of our airport for hangars,\nwhich will help bring development and tax revenue to the area,\u201d Calvert added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The grants the N.C. Board of Transportation approved\nprovide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$171,180 in additional funds to replace the existing fueling\nsystem and install a new fence around the terminal area at Ashe County Airport;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$220,500 to clear obstructions from the runway protection\nzones at Ashe County Airport;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$3 million to complete the expansion of the apron and\ninstallation of a partial-length parallel taxiway at Avery County Airport;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$278,100 inadditional Economic Development Funds to expand\ncity sewer access to new hangar developments at Burlington-Alamance Regional\nAirport;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$1.4 million to reimburse land acquisition costs at Cape\nFear Regional Jetport in Southport;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$75,000 to repair drainage areas at Halifax-Northampton Regional\nAirport;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$200,000 to conduct a geotechnical investigation ahead of\nthe installation of a new haul\/access road at Jackson County Airport;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$234,000 to conduct an environmental assessment for planned\ndevelopment at Johnston Regional Airport;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$191,196 to update the airport layout plan at Montgomery\nCounty Airport;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$54,000 in additional funding to complete the construction\nand activation of a new self-service fueling area at Montgomery County Airport;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$463,500 in additional funds for the design\/bid of a new LED\nairfield lighting system at Moore County Airport;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$315,000 in additional funding to expand the scope of the\ndesign\/bid of the runway safety area widening project to also include the\nrunway and other paved areas at Person County Airport;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$117,000 to clear obstructing trees from the approaches at\nRaleigh Executive Jetport in Sanford; and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$225,000 to update the airport layout plan at\nShelby-Cleveland County Regional Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
North Carolina\u2019s 72 public airports serve as a vital\neconomic engine connecting people and business enterprises with the world and\nare among the primary economic drivers in their communities. Airports and\naviation-related industries contribute more than $52 billion to North\nCarolina\u2019s economy each year, according to the 2019 State of Aviation report.\nThey support 307,000 jobs, generate more than $2.2 billion in state and local\ntax revenue and provide more than $12.6 billion in personal income. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
