Shea will track at the state and federal levels all\nlegislative developments related to the helicopter industry. Reporting to Vice\nPresident of Government Affairs Cade Clark, Shea will meet with US\ncongressional staff to advocate for HAI members on helicopter and general\naviation issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shea comes to HAI from the National Association of State\nAviation Officials (NASAO), where he served as director for government\nrelations in 2019 and as interim president in 2018. For NASAO, he coordinated\nadvocacy and legislative efforts with Congress and federal agencies, and he\nestablished the association\u2019s legislative positions, goals, and timelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHis background of Hill experience and working with\nstate-level officials means that John has a solid grounding in aviation\nissues,\u201d Clark says. \u201cBy bringing him on, HAI has expanded our advocacy\nbandwidth tremendously.\u201d Clark expects that Shea\u2019s familiarity with the Federal\nAviation Administration, knowledge and experience in government affairs, and\ndeep experience in association management and operations will enable him to\nquickly become an effective member of the HAI advocacy team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHAI\u2019s advocacy efforts have resulted in big wins for our\nindustry, such as when we successfully advocated against the privatization of\nair traffic control. But we can\u2019t rest on past accomplishments,\u201d says HAI\nPresident and CEO Matt Zuccaro. \u201cHiring John Shea is one way to communicate to\nthe world at large that we intend to fight for our members.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before joining NASAO, Shea was a congressional staffer for\nseveral years. His legislative portfolio included commerce, financial services,\nhomeland security, trade, and transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shea will bolster HAI\u2019s advocacy efforts in the following\nareas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Strengthening\nfederal and state initiatives to strengthen workforce development for future\nhelicopter pilots and maintenance technicians<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Preserving\naccess to airspace for helicopter operations throughout the National Airspace\nSystem (NAS)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Ensuring\nveterans keep their flight-training benefits<\/p>\n\n\n\n
