The airport has won the title twice before, and\nits last win, in 2012, underscores how rapidly it has grown. It was the\nnation\u2019s 65th-busiest at the time; it\u2019s now 32nd, with 288,000 takeoffs and\ndepartures a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/gateway-airport.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13217\"\/><figcaption>Phoenix Mesa-Gateway Airport<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Don Kriz, ADOT Aeronautics Group manager, said Phoenix-Mesa\nGateway Airport\u2019s accomplishments for its latest award include hosting a\npresidential visit, demonstrating outstanding community outreach and being\nactive in local chambers of commerce. The airport also obtained a perfect\ncertification and operations inspection from the Federal Aviation\nAdministration. &#8220;This airport has done an amazing job in support of their\ncommunity and advancing aviation in the state of Arizona,&#8221; Kriz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The airport\u2019s other highlights include starting programs for\nairport volunteers and aviation careers education. \u201cThis prestigious award is a\ntestament to the high-quality and dedicated employees that have helped create a\nmajor economic engine for the state of Arizona,\u201d said Apache Junction Mayor\nJeff Serdy, chairman of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ADOT\u2019s Aeronautics Group, part of the agency\u2019s Multimodal\nPlanning Division, decides winners based on accomplishments in aviation advocacy\nand community relations, airport management, special events and recognition, as\nwell as innovative activities and programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Aeronautics Group works with dozens of airports across\nArizona to administer federal and state grants through its Airport Development\nProgram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airports bring in approximately $38.5 billion per year to\nArizona\u2019s economy, according to state research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information about airports, ADOT\u2019s Aeronautics Group and the Airport Development Program, please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azdot.gov\/Airports\">azdot.gov\/Airports<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Community outreach and growth are among the reasons Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is the Arizona Department of Transportation\u2019s Airport of the Year for 2019.
