Chao announced\nthat the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will award $840 million in\nairport infrastructure grants, the first allotment of the total $3.18 billion\nin Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding for airports across the United\nStates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis significant investment in airport improvements will\nfund construction and rehabilitation projects that will help maintain high\nlevels of safety in U.S. aviation,\u201d said U.S. Department of Transportation\nSecretary Elaine L. Chao. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 432 grants will fund infrastructure projects at 381 airports\naround the country. Selected projects include runway reconstruction and\nrehabilitation, construction of firefighting facilities, and the maintenance of\ntaxiways, aprons, and terminals. The construction and equipment supported by\nthis funding increase the airports\u2019 safety, emergency response capabilities,\nand capacity, and could support further economic growth and development within\neach airport\u2019s region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airport infrastructure in the United States, with 3,332\nairports and 5,000 paved runways, supports our economic competitiveness and\nimproves quality of life. According to the FAA\u2019s most recent economic analysis,\nU.S. civil aviation accounts for $1.6 trillion in total economic activity and\nsupports nearly 11 million jobs.&nbsp; Under\nSecretary Chao\u2019s leadership, the Department is delivering AIP investments for\nthe American people, who depend on reliable infrastructure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airports can receive a certain amount of AIP entitlement\nfunding each year based on activity levels and project needs. If their capital\nproject needs exceed their available entitlement funds, the FAA can supplement\ntheir entitlements with discretionary funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the grant awards include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in\nBirmingham, AL, $11.5 million \u2013 grant funds will be used to construct an\naircraft rescue and firefighting building, acquire two aircraft rescue and\nfirefighting vehicles, and conduct an environmental study. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wiley Post-Will Rogers Memorial Airport in Utqiagvik, AK,\n$17.1 million \u2013 grant funds will be used to construct an aircraft rescue and\nfirefighting building, a sand and chemical storage building, a snow removal\nequipment building, and an emergency operations center building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bishop Airport in Bishop, CA, $4.6 million \u2013 the airport\nwill use grant funds to rehabilitate some of the airport\u2019s taxiways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Des Moines International Airport in Des Moines, IA, $10.3\nmillion \u2013 grant funds will be used to reconstruct a runway and an apron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, KY, $11 million \u2013 the\nairport will use grant funds to construct a taxiway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fitchburg Municipal Airport in Fitchburg, MA, $13.8 million\n\u2013 grant funds will be used to rehabilitate a taxiway and reconstruct and extend\na runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crater Lake-Klamath Regional Airport in Klamath Falls, OR,\n$6.7 million \u2013 the airport will use grant funds to replace the airport\u2019s wind\ncone, reconstruct and rehabilitate taxiways, and rehabilitate taxiway lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, TN, $14.1 million \u2013 grant\nfunds will be used to reconstruct a runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virginia Tech\/Montgomery Executive Airport in Blacksburg,\nVA, $1.3 million \u2013 the airport will use funds to extend a runway.\n\nClick on the link below for a complete listing\nof grants: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/airports\/aip\/grantapportion_data\">https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/airports\/aip\/grantapportion_data<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L.
