{"id":13018,"date":"2019-06-05T19:39:55","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T19:39:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/?p=13018"},"modified":"2019-06-05T19:39:56","modified_gmt":"2019-06-05T19:39:56","slug":"faa-breaks-ground-for-new-air-traffic-tower-at-gso","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/north-carolina\/faa-breaks-ground-for-new-air-traffic-tower-at-gso\/%20","title":{"rendered":"FAA Breaks Ground for New Air Traffic Tower at GSO"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The U.S. Department of Transportation\u2019s Federal Aviation\nAdministration (FAA) held a groundbreaking ceremony recently for a new Air\nTraffic Control Tower and Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) at Piedmont\nTriad International Airport (GSO) in Greensboro, N.C. The agency will invest\n$61 million in the new facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis investment in infrastructure and technology will place\nthe airport in an excellent position for future growth,\u201d said Michael O\u2019Harra,\nRegional Administrator of the FAA\u2019s Southern Region. \u201cThe new facility will\nenable air traffic controllers to provide the safest and most efficient service\nto Piedmont Triad area travelers for decades to come.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has been 45 years since the current Air Traffic Control\nTower was put into service, said&nbsp; Steve\nShowfety, Chairman of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority. \u201cToday we are\nturning a page. This new tower will give us the modern infrastructure we need\nto live up to the vision of our master plan and will allow the Piedmont Triad\nInternational Airport to continue to add new passenger service, serve our\ncurrent tenants and also add new tenants who will bring investment and jobs to\nthe community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new control tower will be 180 feet tall, topped by a\n550-square-foot tower cab to accommodate up to eight positions for air traffic\ncontrollers. The 15,650-square-foot base building will anchor the new tower and\nwill house the Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) with up to 10 radar\npositions for air traffic controllers. The TRACON controls airspace within a\n60-mile radius of the airport, which includes 20 general aviation airports. It\nwill be equipped with the latest technology for communications and navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction began in April 2019, and the FAA expects to\ncommission the facility in 2022. Total cost is $61 million: $41 million for\nconstruction and $20 million for equipment and installation, cabling,\ntelecommunications, and construction of a new communications\ntransmitter\/receiver. The cost of demolition of the existing facility and\ndisposal of the equipment also is included in the total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>North Carolina is the only state where the FAA is building\ntwo new air traffic control facilities. The FAA will commission the new\n370-foot-tall tower at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in summer 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GSO tower will allow air traffic controllers to manage\nflights safely and efficiently at North Carolina\u2019s third busiest airport.\nGreensboro Tower controlled 85,700 flights and the TRACON handled 150,000 radar\noperations in the 12 months ending on April 30, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 46 FAA employees work at Greensboro Tower \u2013 31 in\nAir Traffic and 15 Technical Operations employees who install and maintain 266\nfacilities at Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Burlington and Martinsville, Va.,\nairports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FAA awarded the construction contract to Archer Western\nConstruction, LLC, of Chicago, Ill., in October 2018.
