U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Aspen Reid<\/em>.  <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The training is essential to ensure airport employees\nknow how to safely recover Luke aircraft that may divert there in the event of\nan emergency or inclement weather. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMesa [Gateway Airport] reached out to us and were\nlooking for training on how to recover these jets,\u201d said 2nd Lt. Phillip\nResnick, 56th Operations Support Squadron Airfield Operations officer. \u201cThis is\none of the primary divert [locations] that we use. If there\u2019s bad weather or an\nemergency, they will come here if they aren\u2019t able to make it back to Luke.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only did the 17 airport employees attend a class with\ninstruction taught by approximately 15 maintainers from the 309th and 61st\nAMUs, they also received hands-on training with an F-16 Fighting Falcon and two\nF-35 Lightning II from Luke. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees were taught how to chock, pin and conduct\nsafety checks to secure the aircraft and shelter it until Luke maintainers\nreach the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited that everyone [got] a first-hand perspective\non the training from the actual military personnel that work on these\naircraft,\u201d said Amy Seifried, Line Shift Supervisor, Gateway Aviation Services\nat Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, \u201cWe [learned] the correct way and the safest\nway to handle them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Luke-Mesa-Training.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12971\" width=\"361\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Luke-Mesa-Training.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Luke-Mesa-Training-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensuring that both the pilots and personnel on the ground\nfelt safe and confident in their abilities to land and recover the aircraft was\nanother goal of this training. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are trying to help them become more prepared to\nsafely receive our jets without any issues,\u201d said Resnick. \u201cWe\u2019re also looking\naround to see if we can bring anything to make it safer for everyone and make\nsure that our pilots feel comfortable landing here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this training, Airmen were able to engage with\nthe local community while imparting knowledge to Mesa\u2019s airport employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve forged really good relationships with them,\u201d said\nResnick. \u201cThis is a really good opportunity to build community partnerships and\nfor our Airmen to show all the great work they do.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo above &#8211; Senior Airman John Botner, 61st Aircraft Maintenance Unit assistant dedicated crew chief, instructs employees of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport how to recover an F-35A Lightning II, May 21, 2019, in Mesa, Ariz.
