{"id":12889,"date":"2019-05-20T15:22:37","date_gmt":"2019-05-20T15:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/?p=12889"},"modified":"2019-05-20T15:22:39","modified_gmt":"2019-05-20T15:22:39","slug":"wisconsin-students-crowned-americas-top-rocketeers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/aviation-education\/wisconsin-students-crowned-americas-top-rocketeers\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin Students Crowned America\u2019s Top Rocketeers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Madison West High School of Madison, Wisconsin today took\nhome the top prize at the world\u2019s largest student rocketry competition \u2013 The\nTeam America Rocketry Challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students from Madison West will now represent the\nUnited States at the International Rocketry Challenge at the Paris\nInternational Air Show in June, facing off against teams from France, the UK,\nand Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis feels amazing \u2013 I didn\u2019t expect us to win today,\u201d\nsaid team captain Jacob Mello. \u201cWe really didn\u2019t know each other well at the\nbeginning of the year, but we became friends and pulled together as a team. We\nencouraged each other, which really helped us today. There\u2019s a lot of pressure\nto keep up America\u2019s winning streak in the international competition, but we\u2019re\nlooking forward to it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teams from Madison West now have won the Team America\nRocketry Challenge three times. This year\u2019s team, consisting of Mazelie\nPassmore (14), Ella Paulin (15), Ethan Lan (15), Rohan Yethiraj (15), Jacob\nMello (15), Lukas Weinhold (14), Alex Goff (14), and Nathan Wagner (15), posted\na combined score of 10 across their two launches. Persistence played a big role\nin the team\u2019s win, as they were still practice launching the week of the\ncontest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team\u2019s victory follows months of preparation\ndesigning, building, and testing a rocket capable of meeting rigorous mission\nparameters set by the contest\u2019s sponsors \u2013 the Aerospace Industries Association\n(AIA), National Association of Rocketry, and more than 20 industry sponsors.\nThis year\u2019s rules celebrated the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 by requiring\neach rocket to carry three eggs in a separate capsule to symbolize the three\nastronauts that made the journey to the Moon and back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Top 101 teams, hailing from 25 states from Hawaii to\nNew York, competed for a total of $100,000 in prize money and scholarships at\nthe national finals \u2013 an all-day event held at Great Meadow in The Plains, Va.,\noutside of Washington, D.C. The $100,000 prize pool will be split among the Top\n10 teams, with Madison West taking home the top prize of $20,000 as U.S.\nchampions.
