U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced last\nweek the intent to award $779 million in supplemental funding for\ninfrastructure grants to 127 airports in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis supplemental funding allows us to invest in important\ninfrastructure needs at the nation\u2019s airports, especially those serving smaller\nand rural communities,\u201d said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The selected airports will receive funding for construction\nor equipment to increase their safety, capacity, and security. Airports are\nvital to the local and regional economy and support critical transportation\nneeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This funding is in addition to the $3.31 billion awarded in\nAirport Improvement Program (AIP) funding during fiscal year 2018, and $205\nmillion awarded in the first tranche of supplemental AIP funding in September\n2018. The recipients of the selected grants will meet any remaining required approvals.\nSelected projects include runway reconstruction and rehabilitation, and the\nmaintenance of taxiways, aprons, and terminals. The construction and equipment\nsupported by this funding increase the airports\u2019 safety, emergency response\ncapabilities, capacity, and could support further potential growth and\ndevelopment within each airport\u2019s region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) published a\nFederal Register notice on July 9, 2018, explaining the evaluation criteria and\nsubmission process. After the FAA awarded $205 million to 37 airports in 34\nstates in September 2018, airports in October 2018 submitted additional funding\nrequests for grant awards in fiscal years 2019 or 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the Secretary\u2019s leadership, the FAA is administering\nthe supplemental funding to strengthen the safety and efficiency of America\u2019s\nairports. These investments increase the nation\u2019s competitiveness and improve\nthe quality of life for the traveling public. According to the FAA\u2019s most\nrecent economic analysis, U.S. civil aviation accounts for $1.6 trillion in\ntotal economic activity and supports nearly 11 million jobs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The requirements under the Consolidated Appropriations Act,\n2018 include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Requiring the FAA to give \u201cpriority consideration\u201d to specific types of airports (smaller and more rural airports); For non-primary airports, there is no local match required for the work covered by the grant; and Requiring the FAA to obligate the supplemental funding by September 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
