The airport won the title twice before, and its last win in 2012\nunderscores how rapidly the airport has grown. The airport was the 65<sup>th<\/sup>\nbusiest in the nation at the time, but has since soared to 32<sup>nd<\/sup>,\nwith 288,000 takeoffs and departures a year.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don Kriz, aeronautics group\nmanager, said the airport was selected for a number of accomplishments that\ninclude hosting a presidential visit, outstanding community outreach and being\nactive in local chambers of commerce. Also, it obtained a perfect Part 139\ncertification and operations inspection from the Federal Aviation\nAdministration. Other highlights include starting programs for airport\nvolunteers and aviation careers education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis prestigious award\nis a testament to the high quality and dedicated employees that have helped\ncreate a major economic engine for the State of Arizona,\u201d said Apache Junction\nMayor Jeff Serdy, chairman of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gateway was one of 67\nqualified Arizona airports nominated for the award, which is based on accomplishments\nin aviation advocacy and community relations, airport management, special\nevents and recognition, as well as innovative activities and programs\nimplemented at the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there are 114\nairports across Arizona, 83 airports\u2014including 11 privately owned airfields and\n14 Native American owned airports\u2014are identified in ADOT\u2019s system of airports.\nThese 83 airports vary in size and serve different functions in meeting\nArizona\u2019s aviation and economic needs. This system of airports brings in approximately\n$38.5 billion per year to the state\u2019s economy, according to state research.\nADOT works with 67 of the 83 airports throughout the federal and state grant\nprocess as part of the Airport Development Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ADOT\u2019s Aeronautics\nGroup within the Multimodal Planning Division accepts applications and\nnominations for Airport of the Year.
