Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nury Martinez,\nThe Park VNY, Van Nuys Airport and The Valley Economic Alliance hosted over 40\nexhibitors showcasing interactive and static aircraft displays, and students\nheard directly from industry experts about career opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs I always say, you can\u2019t be what you can\u2019t see. Aviation\nCareer Day exposes our children to achievable high paying career paths. In a\ntime when the aviation industry is experiencing a shortage of pilots, air\ntraffic controllers, and other aviation fields, it is now more important than\never to introduce aviation to our students,\u201d said City of Los Angeles\nCouncilwoman Nury Martinez. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAviation Career Day allows us to share our passion for\nairports and open kids\u2019 eyes to the wide variety of careers available in our\nprofession,\u201d said Flora Margheritis, Airport Manager, VNY. \u201cWhether they\u2019re\ninto art, science, math or writing, there is a career path for these students\nin the aviation industry, and we want them to know that we want them to be part\nof our team.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTwenty years ago, Western Jet Aviation started with one\nemployee, today we have 75, many of which have been hired right out of our\nlocal schools. We look to hire local workers for all areas of our business, and\nwe\u2019re always seeking out new talent,\u201d said Jim Hansen, owner and founder,\nWestern Jet Aviation. \u201cOur hope is that someday soon, one or more of these\nstudents will come back and knock on our door, ready to join our team.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the highlights of Aviation Career Day was the panel\ndiscussion, \u201cHow to Enter a Career in Aviation,\u201d which included industry\nprofessionals offering insider tips based on their own career experiences.\nPersonnel from the Los Angeles Airport Police and Los Angeles Fire Department\nalso were on hand to talk about their careers. In addition to the speakers,\nindustry experts and informational booths, there were numerous aircraft\navailable with which students took photos and selfies. Aircraft on display\nincluded a U.S. Navy F-18, a NASA Armstrong Research Center C-12, a drone\ndisplay from Helinet Aviation, Los Angeles Fire Department air rescue\nhelicopters, and two WWII-era Condor Squadron AT-6\u2019s, among others.\nParticipants also were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the history and\ndaily operations of VNY, one of the world\u2019s busiest general aviation airports,\nwith an award-winning guided airport tour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date close to 20,000 students have experienced Aviation\nCareer Day since 2006.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 1,200 students learned about aviation career opportunities at the 14th Annual \u201cThe Sky\u2019s the Limit: Aviation Career Day\u201d event at Van Nuys Airport (VNY).
