Chao announced\non April 23<sup>rd<\/sup> that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded\nthe first air carrier certification to a drone delivery company, Wing Aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The certification paved the way for Wing Aviation to begin\ncommercial package delivery in Blacksburg, VA. Wing partnered with the Mid-Atlantic\nAviation Partnership and Virginia Tech, as one of the participants in the\nTransportation Department\u2019s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot\nProgram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an important step forward for the safe testing and\nintegration of drones into our economy. Safety continues to be our Number One\npriority as this technology continues to develop and realize its full\npotential,\u201d said Secretary Chao.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wing demonstrated that its operations met the FAA\u2019s rigorous\nsafety requirements to qualify for an air carrier certificate. This is based on\nextensive data and documentation, as well as thousands of safe flights\nconducted in Australia over the past several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wing plans to reach out to the local community before it begins\nfood delivery, to gather feedback to inform its future operations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L.
