SAS\u2019s Data on the Fly, an event that uses aviation to\ninspire students to pursue science, technology, engineering and math careers,\nreturned to Raleigh-Durham International Airport on April 12th<\/sup> with\na twist. For the first time, all 30 of the students in attendance were girls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speakers and instructors were mostly women as well, and\nincluded Missy Cummings, a Duke professor who was one of the first female\nfighter pilots. Other speakers included Jan Squillace, a member of the 99s and\ngeneral manager of Odyssey Aero Club and Corbi Bulluck, NCDOT Division of\nAviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students heard about career opportunities in aviation and aerospace.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The \u2018Data on the Fly\u2019 program included the SAS team\ninstructing the girls on how to assemble a Stratux, an open-source portable\nADS-B receiver using a Raspberry Pi. Once constructed, the girls were able to\nattach the device to an IPad and track aircraft in the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event, held in the NCDOT Aviation hangar, was part of\nSAS\u2019s sponsorship of the N.C. Science Festival, which is taking place across\nthe state in April. The students were also able to tour the airports air\ntraffic control tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We enjoy any chance to introduce young people to the\nexciting field of aviation with events like Data on the Fly,\u201d said Bobby\nWalston, Director, NCDOT Division of Aviation. \u201cThere are tremendous\nopportunities for a career in aviation, and by exposing students to this field\nearly we can hopefully help them catch the same lifelong interest that so many\nof us have.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n
