Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport has won the Airports\nCouncil International (ACI-NA) Environmental Achievement Award for Best\nInnovative Project for the airport’s successful implementation of the\nthree-year Airfield Rehabilitation Program. The 2019 Airports Council\nInternational (ACI-NA) Environmental Achievement Awards were held last week at\nthe Airports@Work Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Established in 1997, the annual Airports Council\nInternational Environmental Achievement Awards recognize airports that strive\nto protect and preserve the environment through their programs, initiatives and\nprojects. The Airfield Rehabilitation Program at Billy Bishop Airport\nmodernized the airfield with sustainable infrastructure that included a\ncomplete LED lighting and signage retrofit that has reduced energy usage by 75\nper cent and the construction of a Ground Run-up Enclosure (GRE) facility that\nhas all but eliminated noise impacts in the community associated with\nhigh-power aircraft engine run-up operations. In addition to the positive\nenvironmental results achieved by the program, the project incorporated\ninnovative measures to reduce the impact of construction on the environment,\nthe community and on airport operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“North American airports recognize that continued\nsustainability leads to economic vitality and operational efficiency while\nminimizing their environmental footprint,” said ACI-NA President and CEO\nKevin M. Burke. “By implementing sustainable business practices, the 2019\nACI-NA Environmental Achievement Award winners are industry leaders when it\ncomes to protecting the environment while serving their passengers and\ncommunities.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the second time that Billy Bishop Airport has won\nan Airports Council International (ACI-NA) Environmental Achievement Award. In\n2017, the airport won the top award for its Noise Management Program. In\naddition, Billy Bishop Airport has won a series of passenger-driven awards,\nincluding being named one of the top airports globally and in North America in\nboth the Airports Council International’s (ACI) Airport Service Quality Awards\nand Skytrax World Airport Awards.
