EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2019, the 67th annual\nExperimental Aircraft Association fly-in convention, is July 22-28 at Wittman\nRegional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collins will be will be joined by fellow Apollo astronaut\nJoe Engle during the evening program at Theater in the Woods on Friday, July\n26, hosted by four-time space shuttle astronaut Charlie Precourt. The program\nwill highlight the millions of man-hours and hundreds of thousands of people\nwho made the first manned moon landing possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven a half-century later, the Apollo 11 mission stands as\none of the great human achievements of all time,\u201d said Rick Larsen, EAA\u2019s vice\npresident of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture\nfeatures and attractions. \u201cWe are honored to have Michael Collins, Joe Engle,\nand others take us back to the memorable \u2018one giant leap for mankind.\u2019 We know\nthis will be a hugely popular evening program that will make EAA AirVenture\n2019 even more of a must-attend event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collins, mission commander Neil Armstrong, and lunar module\npilot Buzz Aldrin departed then-Cape Kennedy, Florida, on July 16, 1969, as the\nfamed Saturn V rocket lifted the trio into space. On July 20, the lunar module\nlanded on the moon\u2019s surface, with the first human steps by Armstrong and\nAldrin on the surface a few hours later. Apollo 11 made a successful splashdown\nin the Pacific Ocean on July 24, 1969.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collins\u2019 NASA career began in 1963 as part of the third\ngroup of astronauts selected. His first space flight was aboard the Gemini 10\nmission with John Young in 1966, when Collins became America\u2019s third\nspacewalker. Prior to his career at NASA, he earned his college degree at West\nPoint and built flight time in U.S. Air Force F-86 Sabres at Nellis Air Force\nBase in Nevada, as well as serving at George Air Force Base and Edwards Air\nForce Base in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After leaving NASA in 1970, Collins joined the Smithsonian\nInstitution for 10 years, serving for seven years as director of the\nSmithsonian\u2019s National Air and Space Museum.
