{"id":12451,"date":"2019-04-02T15:35:41","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T15:35:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/?p=12451"},"modified":"2019-04-02T15:35:42","modified_gmt":"2019-04-02T15:35:42","slug":"oklahoma-aeronautics-commission-to-honor-aviation-art-contest-winners-at-state-capitol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/oklahoma\/oklahoma-aeronautics-commission-to-honor-aviation-art-contest-winners-at-state-capitol\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission to Honor Aviation Art Contest Winners at State Capitol"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission announced the names of\ntwelve students that placed in the Oklahoma 2019 International Aviation Art\nContest in February and will hold an awards ceremony honoring those students at\nthe State Capitol April 11, 2019 at 11:30 am in the Oklahoma State Senate\nChamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state-level Aviation Art Contest, sponsored by the\nAeronautics Commission, encourages youth, ages 6 to 17, to reflect on aviation\nby designing a piece of art based on the year\u2019s chosen theme. This year\u2019s\ncontest theme was \u201cMy Dream to Fly.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the year 2014, 35 students participated. In 2015, there\nwere 85 entrants.&nbsp; A total of 132\nstudents contributed in 2016 and the contest yielded 1,112 entries from 73\nschools statewide in 2017.&nbsp; The entries\nfor 2018 accounted for 1,301 entries and 81 schools across the state. In 2019,\nthe agency received 1,220 entries from 86 schools.&nbsp; This year marks the most participating\nschools since the Commission began hosting the contest.&nbsp; The agency attributes their success to their\naviation art contest calendar which is mailed to all of the public and private\nschools across the state.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Junior Division, ages 6 to 9, Brecker Tubbs, from\nAtor Heights Elementary in Owasso, took home first prize. This year\u2019s\nsecond-place winner was Chloe Childs from Community Christian School in Norman,\nwhile third place went to Haven Herrod, from Latta Public Schools in Ada.&nbsp; Ruby Nix received an honorable mention from\nthe judges and is a student at Holy Trinity Lutheran School in Edmond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Channing Reames from Guthrie, a student at Guthrie Upper\nElementary took top honors in the Intermediate Division, ages 10-13. Taking\nsecond was Faith Lawson from Willard Elementary School in Ada, while Anneliese\nWeir, also from Ada and a student at Willard Elementary School, placed third.\nReceiving an Honorable Mention in the division, Marcelo Casas, Jr., is a\nstudent at Hooker Public Schools in Hooker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guymon High School\u2019s Adamariz Veleta from Guymon finished\natop the Senior Division, ages 14-17, followed by Omar Lira, also a student at\nGuymon High School in Guymon. Ashlynn Buchanan from Enid High School in Enid,\ntook third. Maricza Lopez from Kingfisher High School from Kingfisher received\nan honorable mention in the division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRecently we learned from a comprehensive economic impact\nstudy of aviation and aerospace activity, that aviation and aerospace has\nbecome the second largest industry in the state providing over 206,000 jobs. We\nmust have skilled and competent workers for that industry to remain viable,\u201d\ndirector of aeronautics Vic Bird said. \u201cThe annual Oklahoma Aviation Art\nContest is critical to stimulating aviation interest among young minds.&nbsp; If we can reach them at the earliest of ages,\nwe can guide them into STEM based education and aviation and aerospace\ncareers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The judges included Brian Dahlvang, communications program\nspecialist, FAA Monroney Center, who is also a graphic designer and artist;\nAeronautics District 4&nbsp; Commissioner\nLindy Ritz, former FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) Monroney Center\ndirector and current president of the Ritz Group who also serves as the\nassistant director of the FAA Center of Excellence, Brigadier General Ben T.\nRobinson, former Commander, 552nd Air Control Wing at Tinker Air Force Base and\nowner of Century One, LLC; State Representative Tammy West from House District\n84, who serves as an Assistant Majority Whip and the Majority Caucus Chair;\nRetired Army Chief Warrant Officer 5, Chase Rutledge, pilot and journalist for\nKOCO\u2019s Sky5 helicopter; Britton Lee, single and multi-engine certified flight\ninstructor and designated pilot examiner and airframe and powerplant mechanic;\nand Jeff James, vice president of aerospace education for the Air Force\nAssociation Gerrity Chapter #215.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cWe were greatly\npleased with the number of schools and students represented in rural and urban\nareas.&nbsp; The Commission is purposefully\nremoved from any of the judging aspects of the contest, and the outcome is\nbased solely on the volunteer judges from the aviation and aerospace community,\u201d\nsaid Sandra Shelton, contest organizer and public information officer for the\nCommission. \u201cWe thank every teacher who participated in the contest and\nencouraged their students to enter, and we hope they will enter again next\nyear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First-place winners in each of the three age categories\nreceive $200, while the second-place winners receive $150. A cash prize of $100\nis presented to students who place third, and honorable mention will receive\n$50. In addition to the cash prizes, the winners are also presented with\ncertificates of achievement as well as citations from their respective state\nsenator and state representative during a ceremony at the Oklahoma State\nCapitol. The top three entries in each age division are forwarded to\nWashington, D.C., where they compete nationally against other winners from the\nU.S. for the right to advance to the international competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2019 International Aviation Art Contest is sponsored, in\nlarge part, by the National Aeronautic Association, F\u00e9d\u00e9ration A\u00e9ronautique Internationale,\nNational Association of State Aviation Officials, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical\nUniversity, National Coalition for Aviation and Space Education, Federal\nAviation Administration and the Ken Cook Co.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission announced the names of twelve students that placed in the Oklahoma 2019 International Aviation Art Contest in February and will hold an awards ceremony honoring those students at the State Capitol April 11, 2019 at 11:30 am in the Oklahoma State Senate Chamber.
