{"id":12249,"date":"2019-03-11T18:17:30","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T18:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/?p=12249"},"modified":"2019-03-11T19:01:53","modified_gmt":"2019-03-11T19:01:53","slug":"washington-dulles-recognizes-women-in-airport-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/virginia\/washington-dulles-recognizes-women-in-airport-operations\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Washington Dulles Recognizes Women in Airport Operations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In honor of Women in Aviation Worldwide Week, Dulles\nInternational Airport in Washington D.C. introduced two women who are changing\nthe face of operations at Washington Dulles International Airport in\nWashington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristen Long, C.M., A.C.E., airport operations duty manager,\nand Janene Shaw, acting deputy of airport operations duty manager, both\ndeveloped a passion for aviation at a young age. Kristen spent hours floating\nin her parents\u2019 pool watching the planes above her line up for final approach,\nwhile Janene\u2019s older sister was in the Air Force and encouraged her to learn\nhow to fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their love of aviation, adventure and connecting people all\nover the world far outweigh the challenges of working in this typically\nmale-dominated industry. From airfield inspections to an aircraft alert or to a\nsecurity incident, they agree that women are an untapped resource and bring a\ndifferent viewpoint to dealing with the many facets of operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kristen-Long-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12250\" width=\"243\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kristen-Long-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kristen-Long-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><figcaption><em>Kristen Long<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Long says, \u201cGrowing up on a farm with my two sisters, my\ndad relied on us greatly to help out. We were never allowed to say that we\ncouldn\u2019t do something because we are girls. It taught me a great work ethic and\nthat there is nothing I cannot do because I am a girl.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Long has been the Airport Operations Duty Manager for Washington Dulles International Airport since 2016, bringing to the role a mindset of perseverance and proof that women are an untapped resource in the many facets of airport operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Airport Operations Duty Manager for an international\nairport in the National Capital Region, she oversees airfield inspections,\naircraft alerts, and security incidents, though her greatest satisfaction is\nlocating and resolving discrepancies on the airfield to improve safety for the\ntravelling public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her career successes span more than a decade and include\naviation emergency preparedness, practical flight experience and peer\nrecognition. Her achievements include receiving the first approval to fly a\ndrone during the IAD Part 139 Triennial Exercise in May 2018; planning the\nairport emergency tabletops and triennial exercises; and earning her Certified\nMember and Airport Certified Employee designations through American Association\nof Airport Executives. Further, she holds a private pilot\u2019s license and the new\nremote pilot\u2019s license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She began her career in aviation at Rocky Mountain Metro Airport\nwhere she was trained as an Aircraft Rescue Firefighter, followed by Denver\nInternational Airport as an Airport Ops Specialist\/Ramp Tower Controller. She\nhas also served as an Airport Operations Supervisor for Charlotte Douglas\nInternational Airport and as a Communications and Security Specialist for\nPortland International Jetport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Long received a Bachelor of Science in Aviation\nManagement from Kent State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Janene-Shaw-v.2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12251\" width=\"262\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Janene-Shaw-v.2.jpg 290w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Janene-Shaw-v.2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Janene-Shaw-v.2-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/><figcaption><em>Janene Shaw<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Shaw\u2019s advice for other women in the aviation industry\nis to \u201ccontinue to engage in the different aspects of aviation; there\u2019s more to\nit than just working at an airline and understanding the industry as a whole\nhas great benefits.\u201d She began her career with the Metropolitan Washington\nAirports Authority more than 20 years ago and has held various positions,\nincluding Safety and Security Specialist, Duty Manager and Supervisory Duty\nManager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her time at Dulles, she has been responsible for\norchestrating the airport\u2019s compliance with Code of Federal Regulations Part\n139, which is necessary to obtain an Airport Operating Certificate from the FAA.\nIn addition, she has been responsible for coordinating capital improvement\nprojects, including the $174.2 million main terminal expansion, building of the\nAeroTrain, and building of the Airport Traffic Control Tower. In her current\nrole, she interacts with day-to-day airport operations ensuring everything is\nfunctioning efficiently and effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her biggest accomplishments are helping the airport grow,\nboth in development of land and facilities as well as passengers, improving the\nsystems and introducing new technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, she worked for Virgin Atlantic at Newark\nInternational Liberty Airport, Philadelphia International Airport and Dulles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Janene was introduced to aviation by her sister who was in\nthe U.S. Air Force, and pays it forward by encouraging other women to explore\ncareers in the industry.
