{"id":12039,"date":"2019-02-20T22:24:55","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T22:24:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/?p=12039"},"modified":"2019-02-20T22:24:56","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T22:24:56","slug":"oklahoma-announces-2019-state-aviation-art-contest-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/oklahoma\/oklahoma-announces-2019-state-aviation-art-contest-winners\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Oklahoma Announces 2019 State Aviation Art Contest Winners"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission announced the names of\ntwelve students that placed in the Oklahoma 2019 International Aviation Art\nContest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state-level Aviation Art Contest, sponsored by the\nAeronautics Commission, encourages youth, ages 6 to 17, to reflect on aviation\nby designing a piece of art based on the year\u2019s chosen theme. This year\u2019s\ncontest theme was \u201cMy Dream to Fly.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the year 2014, 35 students participated. In 2015, there\nwere 85 entrants.&nbsp; A total of 132\nstudents contributed in 2016 and the contest yielded 1,112 entries from 73\nschools statewide in 2017.&nbsp; The entries\nfor 2018 accounted for 1,301 entries and 81 schools across the state. In 2019,\nthe agency received 1,220 entries from 86 schools.&nbsp; This year marks the most participating\nschools since the Commission began hosting the contest.&nbsp; The agency attributes their success to their\naviation art contest calendar which is mailed to all of the public and private\nschools across the state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Junior Division, ages 6 to 9, Brecker Tubbs, from\nAtor Heights Elementary in Owasso, took home first prize. This year\u2019s\nsecond-place winner was Chloe Childs from Community Christian School in Norman,\nwhile third place went to Haven Herrod, from Latta Public Schools in Ada.&nbsp; Ruby Nix received an honorable mention from\nthe judges and is a student at Holy Trinity Lutheran School in Edmond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Channing Reames from Guthrie, a student at Guthrie Upper\nElementary took top honors in the Intermediate Division, ages 10-13. Taking\nsecond was Faith Lawson from Willard Elementary School in Ada, while Anneliese\nWeir, also from Ada and a student at Willard Elementary School, placed third.\nReceiving an Honorable Mention in the division, Marcelo Casas, Jr., is a\nstudent at Hooker Public Schools in Hooker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guymon High School\u2019s Adamariz Veleta from Guymon finished\natop the Senior Division, ages 14-17, followed by Omar Lira, also a student at\nGuymon High School in Guymon. Ashlynn Buchanan from Enid High School took\nthird. Maricza Lopez from Kingfisher High School received an honorable mention\nin the division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRecently we learned from a comprehensive economic impact\nstudy of aviation and aerospace activity, that aviation and aerospace has\nbecome the second largest industry in the state providing over 206,000 jobs. We\nmust have skilled and competent workers for that industry to remain viable,\u201d\ndirector of aeronautics Vic Bird said. \u201cThe annual Oklahoma Aviation Art\nContest is critical to stimulating aviation interest among young minds.&nbsp; If we can reach them at the earliest of ages,\nwe can guide them into STEM based education and aviation and aerospace\ncareers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The judges included Brian Dahlvang, communications program\nspecialist, FAA Monroney Center, who is also a graphic designer and artist;\nAeronautics District 4&nbsp; Commissioner\nLindy Ritz, former FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) Monroney Center\ndirector and current president of the Ritz Group who also serves as the assistant\ndirector of the FAA Center of Excellence, Brigadier General Ben T. Robinson,\nformer Commander, 552nd Air Control Wing at Tinker Air Force Base and owner of\nCentury One, LLC; State Representative Tammy West from House District 84, who\nserves as an Assistant Majority Whip and the Majority Caucus Chair; Retired\nArmy Chief Warrant Officer 5, Chase Rutledge, pilot and journalist for KOCO\u2019s\nSky5 helicopter; Britton Lee, single and multi-engine certified flight\ninstructor and designated pilot examiner and airframe and powerplant mechanic;\nand Jeff James, vice president of aerospace education for the Air Force\nAssociation Gerrity Chapter #215.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were greatly pleased with the number of schools and\nstudents represented in rural and urban areas.&nbsp;\nThe Commission is purposefully removed from any of the judging aspects\nof the contest, and the outcome is based solely on the volunteer judges from\nthe aviation and aerospace community,\u201d said Sandra Shelton, contest organizer\nand public information officer for the Commission. \u201cWe thank every teacher who\nparticipated in the contest and encouraged their students to enter, and we hope\nthey will enter again next year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First-place winners in each of the three age categories\nreceive $200, while the second-place winners receive $150. A cash prize of $100\nis presented to students who place third, and honorable mention will receive\n$50. In addition to the cash prizes, the winners are also presented with\ncertificates of achievement as well as citations from their respective state senator\nand state representative during a ceremony at the Oklahoma State Capitol. The\ntop three entries in each age division are forwarded to Washington, D.C., where\nthey compete nationally against other winners from the U.S. for the right to\nadvance to the international competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2019 International Aviation Art Contest is sponsored, in\nlarge part, by the National Aeronautic Association, F\u00e9d\u00e9ration A\u00e9ronautique\nInternationale, National Association of State Aviation Officials, Embry-Riddle\nAeronautical University, National Coalition for Aviation and Space Education,\nFederal Aviation Administration and the Ken Cook Co.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission announced the names of twelve students that placed in the Oklahoma 2019 International Aviation Art Contest.
