Just under 45 million\ntravelers passed through America\u2019s Friendliest Airport\u00ae last year, surpassing\nthe previous record set in 2015 when just over 44 million passengers were\nserved. The year-end passenger total for Phoenix Sky Harbor was exactly\n44,943,686, a 2.3 percent increase compared to 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sky Harbor\u2019s passenger totals now exceed pre-recession\nnumbers by more than 6 percent. In addition, the Airport\u2019s passenger total is\nmore than 11 percent higher than the year before the merger was announced\nbetween US Airways and American Airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arizona\u2019s robust economy and the appeal of the Grand Canyon\nState as a travel destination are major contributing factors in Sky Harbor\u2019s\nsuccess. The Phoenix area is particularly busy in the spring with students on\nSpring Break and popular events such as Spring Training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSky Harbor\u2019s record passenger numbers are a testament to\nPhoenix\u2019s growing economy,\u201d said Mayor Thelda Williams. \u201cPhoenix is a\ndestination for business and leisure travel. Through key investments, Sky\nHarbor is continually improving to better the travel experience for\npassengers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phoenix Sky Harbor, which offers nonstop service to more\nthan 100 domestic destinations and 22 international destinations, continues to\nwork with airlines to expand flight options. American Airlines is launching\ndaily nonstop service from PHX to London on March 31. Last year, Condor\nAirlines began service from PHX to Frankfurt, Germany, and is extending that\nservice this year. Air Canada also added a nonstop flight to Montreal, and Sky\nHarbor saw new domestic routes like Grand Rapids, Mich. and Madison, Wis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sky Harbor is making several key investments in order to\nserve its record number of passengers. Earlier this month, the Airport opened a\nbrand new south concourse and remodeled post-security lobby area in Terminal 3.\nTravelers will find all new shops and restaurants, as well as a new Delta Sky\nClub, unique displays of public art, and important customer amenities like\naccess to power from nearly every seat in the newly remodeled terminal. The\nthird component of the project \u2013 the renovation of the Terminal 3 north\nconcourse \u2013 is underway and is anticipated to be complete in 2020. This will\nbring in additional new shops, restaurants and customer amenities. America\u2019s\nFriendliest Airport\u00ae is also in the process of extending the PHX Sky Train\u00ae to\nthe Rental Car Center. Beginning in 2022, the extension will provide a much\nquicker and more convenient experience for those renting and returning cars.\nAnd, Sky Harbor is breaking ground on the eighth and final concourse at\nTerminal 4, which will be complete in 2022, and provide eight new gates for\nSouthwest Airlines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport achieved a new milestone in 2018, serving a record number of passengers.
