Granby Airport Pioneers Wall of Fame To Be Unveiled

On Thursday, November 20, 2014, the Friends of the Granby Airport, Inc. will unveil the Granby Airport Pioneers Wall of Fame. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held inside the former airline terminal at 4:00 p.m. on that day. The public is invited to attend.

The Granby Airport Pioneers Hall of ‘Fame recognizes volunteers who gave of their own time and served without compensation to build and preserve the Granby Airport from its earliest days in 1945 through 1990. Depicted on the wall are those men and women of yesteryear who created and preserved the airport which is now one the best General Aviation airports in the Rocky Mountain West. In 2009, the Colorado Pilots Association named the airport its General Aviation Airport of the Year.

On July 30, 2013, the Friends of the Granby Airport Inc. announced plans for the Wall of Fame to its members, to
Experimental Aviation Chapter 1267, to local members of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, to the Grand County Board of Commissioners, and to the general public. A request was made for nominations. The friends, heirs, and relatives of the laureates responded with photographs and memoranda. And, sadly, in many cases, obituaries.

The picture framing was done by Lauren Gompertz of Rocky Mountain Interiors. The carpentry work for the display was done by Bill Teal, Handy Man, Inc. of Grand Lake. Many of the photos of the laureates and much of the historical data were provided by Tim Nicklas of the Grand County Historical Association. The entire Granby Airport Pioneers Wall of Fame Project was paid for by the Friends of the Granby Airport, Inc. which also provided the paint and brushes to repaint the outside of the former airline terminal. Members of local EAA Chapter 1267 painted the outside walls and the trim.
