Immense Wood Sculptures Loom Large at Phoenix Sky Harbor

IMG_0044 smalleredit.jpg The massive wood sculptures by Phoenix artist, Mitch Fry, brings to mind Aristotle’s famous phrase, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” His large-scale artworks, which are fabricated with a multitude of small pieces, are on display in the Phoenix Airport Museum’s current exhibition titled, Form Matters.

The exhibition is located at Terminal 4 on level 3 in the Gallery and will be showcased through July 10. The Gallery is open 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. daily.

Passengers traveling through Sky Harbor can view his one-of-a kind productions inspired by geometric shapes found in nature. The sculptures are displayed along with his intricately detailed drawings that helped him determine the size and shapes of the smaller pieces, as well as their arrangement and assemblage into the giant form.

The natural colors and textures of wood are instrumental to Fry for developing the pattern, rhythm and an interdependence between various sections for an overall composition. The beauty and complexity apparent in his sculptures is testament, for Mitch Fry, that Form Matters.

The Phoenix Airport Museum is one of the largest airport art museums in the U.S. The museum includes an art collection of nearly 900 artworks, 35 exhibition spaces in six buildings and the Aviation History Collection. For more information, visit https://skyharbor.com/Museum/Exhibitions/Terminal4
